John Byng INGLIS

Well this young man has been a bit of a problem to trace what happened to him!!!!
But eventually we have managed to fill in some of the gaps although there are still
some areas I would like to complete............

It would appear that he was sent away to a "Navy" school in a similar way to his brothers
who went to Christ's Hospital - young John was sent to the Royal Greenwich Hospital School
This is evidenced by documents in the National Archive :-

Reference: ADM 73/264/21

ADM 73 - Admiralty: Royal Greenwich Hospital: Pensioners and School Admission Papers,
Out Pensions Pay Books and Miscellaneous Registers School Admission papers

ADM 73/264/21 - John Byng Inglis . When admitted to Greenwich Hospital School: Not stated.
Parents' names: James and Sarah Inglis.
Applicant born. Parents married in Kingston, Portsea. Father a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.

Have to say I quite like this record as it shows James Inglis as a Lieutant when married to Sarah
This helps to reinforce the link between the two families which have James as Father

The next time we pick him up is when he is in the Royal Navy - he seems to have a start date of 13 March 1861
which would put him about 17 years of age - which to me seems a bit old to be starting in the navy - but maybe
he was serving as a "boy" somewhere before the records start as they only seem to keep records on people who
are likely to have a pension - so maybe he was in the Navy prior to that date but not recorded

John's Service Record

After his discharge from the Royal Navy he disappears for a while until he re appears in Buenos Aires in 1876
getting married to Catherine Anne COWAN and living in an area where people from Scotland seem to be grouped.
