Census Information 1871

Note James is in the 1871 Census in two places!!!!

He appears in the listing below in Portsmouth - but he is also recorded for the same night with his family in Hampreston - Note - he was only counted once as the heading of the page for him in Portsmouth reads "List of the Officers, Men, Boys Marines and of all other persons - (at this point it should say onboard - but someone arrowed in a "not") on the night of Sunday April 2nd 1871"

Because of the addition of the "not" the page has been struck out and marked "not to be abstracted"

Interesting place of birth - but we need to bear in mind that he was "raised" in Chrit's Hospital in Middlesex - so the records that the person completing this return might have had could have led them to believe that he was born in London - rather than Scotland

It is interesting to note that his Brother Wiiliam's place of birth was shown incorrectly for a similar return completed for him when he was on a ship
