Obituary of Sidney Charles Walden


DEATH OF MR "SID" WALDEN

Extremely well known among ex- Servicemen and club members in Slough and district, Mr Sidney Charles Walden, of 13, Stoke-road, Slough, died on Friday, aged 47.

Born in London, Mr Walden came to Slough 26 years ago. When the Great War broke out he joined the Coldstream Guards, and eventually became acting sergeant-major. He fought in the battle of Mons, and although never wounded, had many marrow escapes and once suffered from gas poisoning.

After the war he became very well known in Slough as a keen memeber and officer of the Old Contemptibles' Association, the Old Coldstream Guard's Association, and also of the Slough Working Men's Club, of which he was secretary for a number of years.

Some ten years ago, before the film slump, Mr Walden was the commissionaire at Pine wood Studios, and was very proud of his autograph album which contained the names of nearly all the most important British stars.

The funeral service was held yseterday (Thursday). There was a service at St Paul's Church, Stoke-road, the Rev. F W Martin officiating, and internment followed at the Slough Cemetery. The coffin was draped with a Union Jack, and as the cortege moved up William-street towards St Paul's it halted outside the Working Men's Club as a sign of the esteem in which Mr Walden was held among the club members.

The family mourners were the wife and children; Mrs Maxwell and Miss Maxwell (sister-in-law and niece), Mr and Mrs Frank Mason, Mrs Cullip (sister), Mrs A Walden (sister-in-law), and Mr A Killip (brother-in-law).

The following represetatives of the Working Men's Club were present at the funeral : Mr J Williams (president), Mr T Green, Mr B Thurlow, Mr H Marshall, Mr Wiggins and Mr Wood.
